filibuster over the surprising delay he is stuck in now. the chuck hagel nomination seemed like it was done. enough republicans had said they would support mr. hagel's nomination. enough republicans had agreed that they should not filibuster him. but he looked ready to be confirmed by the senate. but now it is not clear when that vote might happen, even though if the -- even though the outcome of that vote is a foregone conclusion. the senate armed services committee has now put off its vote on mr. hagel. and that's because 23 senate republicans are demanding that chuck hagel provide specific financial information about private corporations where he has served on the board. not information about the money he made but information about the corporations themselves. the senators are also demanding that chuck hagel give them copies of every speech he has made in the past five years, including notes you utilized for preparation or in giving the remarks, to which former senator hagel has responded, "your request for financial information regarding certain private corporate and non-profit entities

senator chuck hagel. his confirmation hearings for defense secretary were not a breeze. the vote on his nomination has not yet happened. republicans in the senate are now hinting that they might even filibuster chuck hagel's nomination for defense, which of course sounds normal, because, you know, it seems like republicans filibuster anything now. but in fact that would not be normal that would be unprecedented if they do it. the reason republicans are even considering doing this unprecedented thing is because they cannot block chuck hagel's nomination by normal means. even though the republicans have persuaded lots of the senators on their own side to oppose his nomination, they are a minority. and they have not persuaded any democrats to oppose him at all, at least none that have come out so far and said they'll vote no. now, there was that strange effort which seems to have been a right-wing effort to make it look like there was a democratic and left-wing opposition to chuck hagel. but honestly, it was ridiculous. and we had to pull out the bullpucky siren. it was this really ham-han

, it is certain, noises for filibustering, that is a leap, if they filibuster chuck hagel, they will not succeed. we know it because of math. there are 55 senators in the democracy caucus, they support chuck hagel, you need 60 to override a filibuster, so if you carry the one, the democrats only need one on their side to support a filibuster, there are two on record supporting chuck hagel for defense secretary, and we've seen reports for another six republican senators who have said that even though they may, oppose hagel, they wouldn't support a filibuster, there are two that seem unlikely to filibuster as well. that means a total of ten republican senators who wouldn't support the filibuster, and if i have done the math right that is double the amount they need to override it. it is still more than enough, even if you subtract the squishy two. the vote is not expected until thursday, the full senate vote not expected until after that, but honestly, barring something unforeseen, we'll have a new defense secretary and it will be chuck hagel because of math. >>> the white house is pushing ahead w

that confirmation hearing? because we know chuck hagel had a difficult time, john kerry's was fairly straightforward. does this mean that john brennan may have quite a tough time thursday? >> reporter: he might. carney said he still believes brennan will be confirmed, but in a letter to president obama, 11 senators said that this could complicate those confirmation hearings, including ron widen, susan collins of maine saying that they want more answers about this. of course, brennan is really the only person in the administration who has spoken directly about the drone program making the point that the administration only targets someone if they believe they have good cause, if they believe that there won't be a lot of collateral damage. so this is something that he has talked about. carney pointed to the fact that a lot of this is still classified, so there are probably limits to what he can be asked during this confirmation hearing, but, martin, he's going to get some tough questions. >> and you will be there to report on it. nbc news white house correspondent kristin welker. thank you. >>. >> rep
